Mancuso among 50 American executives meeting with Indonesian president, ministers
09 December 2004
Baltimore, Md. – Dr. Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego,
is part of a major delegation of senior business executives meeting with Indonesian officials in Jakarta
this week. The mission was organized by the US-ASEAN Business Council, Inc., the leading U.S. private
business organization dedicated to promoting increased trade and investment between the United States
and ASEAN member nations.
Among the government officials scheduled to meet with the delegation are Indonesian President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Yusuf Kalla. Meetings are also being held with Ministers of
Energy and Mineral Resources; National Development Planning; Economy; Transportation; Communications and
Information; and Political, Legal and Security Affairs.
Mancuso’s focus in Indonesia is encouraging greater collaboration between the health
and business communities. "Jhpiego’s work in HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and developing
human resources for health helps produce healthy workers and stronger economies. I am very pleased
to have the opportunity to share ideas and goals with Indonesia’s leadership through participation
in the US-ASEAN mission."
The Council has been coming to Indonesia on business missions each year for more than
seven years. Its visits are part of a broad, long-term dialogue on the role of the private sector
in Indonesia's development. "We recognize that the U.S. private sector is looking for ways to give
back to the local community in Indonesia," said Mancuso. "Jhpiego is encouraged about the potential
for public-private partnerships emanating from this mission to help increase the health and welfare
of Indonesia’s women and families."
In addition to Jhpiego, the delegation includes representatives from companies such
as ExxonMobil, Unocal, IAG, Boeing, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, General Motors, Hewlett Packard,
Oracle, Raytheon, UPS, United Technologies and Microsoft. The group is accompanied by officials from
the US Department of Energy and the US Department of Commerce and His Excellency Soemadi Brotodiningrat,
Ambassador of Indonesia to the United States.
